Amber Johnson

Art Director

How did you get into the industry?

I wandered into film school after a year of taking generals and I haven't looked back. While continuously working as a director I've explored nearly every role in production, post-production (even acting) to learn everything there is to know about creating beautiful and compelling media.

What inspires you?

Seeing others take risks and create bold new work.

What is your hometown?

Wheaton, MN

Favorite restaurant?

Cafe Racer Kitchen

What do you like to do on the weekends?

Garden, cook, go on hikes with my dog. I'm basically a sort of cool grandma.

What is your favorite band or type of music?

Robyn, Eurotrash pop

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

"Fake it" - At the time I was still in college and didn't have the confidence to be as bold with my work as I wanted even though I put a lot of thought and effort into it. It was what I needed to hear to take risks and make the wild little film I wanted to make. Now I've changed this sentiment to "do the work and trust your abilities".

What book, movie read/seen recently you would recommend and why?

A book: NK Jemisin's The City We Became is such a cool fantasy book that personifies all the boroughs of New York who go to battle against a force that represents homogeneity and white supremacy. It's really cool.

Are you a traveler or a homebody? Why?

Traveler, I love to get out to see and experience new cultures, foods, art and people.
