Jeff McLain
Audio, Digital Tech, DIT, Photographer, Retoucher, & Aspiring Co-Producer
How did you get into the industry?
After I went to a photo school in Mass. I jumped into freelance assisting in SF > pivoted into digitech/retoucher for 15 years > took on product and arch photo jobs > moved to Montana > got into video > got into location sound for other video/film teams while also producing my own videos > moved to Mpls > what's next? Probably all of these things! And who knows what else... I have dreams to film some of my own short or/and feature films someday, which has me learning more about the film producing end of the spectrum. I'm always learning and pivoting with the times.
What inspires you?
I'm drawn to things that make me laugh, the avant garde, humorous absurdity, narratives about the underbelly of society, as well as the usual nature, music, art, rainbows, puppies and The Muppets. The thing that gets my blood pumping is when I ideate something and then bring it into being. That inertia is wildly inspirational; the feeling of being inspired in the moment, it feeds on itself.
What is your hometown?
Keene, NH
Favorite restaurant?
Just moved to town so hard to say as of yet!
What do you like to do on the weekends?
The usual outdoor stuff, but I like to play music with others.
What is your favorite band or type of music?
Newgrass/Bluegrass
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
"You'll have a bunch of different jobs in your career, don't worry about it - just keep moving forward." - my father
What book, movie read/seen recently you would recommend and why?
I read mostly non-fiction, but I liked Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind - Movie: The Grab, a 2022 documentary, keep your eyes peeled for it!
Are you a traveler or a homebody? Why?
50/50 - I love to travel but I do love my couch and comfy pants.
